Transportation Planning

Transportation and land-use planning today is more complicated than ever before. To find solutions that maximize the efficiency of new and existing transportation facilities, planners and engineers need effective collaboration and visualization tools. The Minnesota Traffic Observatory has developed tools and techniques that bring complex planning issues into clear perspective.

Featured Project: Modeling Traffic Impacts on Visitor Experience and on Wildlife in Public Spaces

In this study, the MTO worked with the National Park Service to understand the effects of park traffic on the animal inhabitants and on the experience of park visitors in Denali National Park. MTO researchers developed a specialized model of traffic and wildlife sightings in the park. This model allows park managers to better understand the capacity limits of the current transportation system as well as the impacts of traffic on critical animal crossings and migration routes. The MTO also created tools to allow Denali officials to evaluate alternative traffic scenarios.
