Traffic Management

Improving the management of transportation networks is a key area of research at the Minnesota Traffic Observatory. The MTO’s simulation and modeling capabilities, equipped for any project from a single intersection to a metropolitan area, are employed in research to optimize traffic signal algorithms, increase or decrease travel demand, reconfigure road networks, and develop and test new traffic control strategies.

Featured Project: Evaluation of the Effect MnPASS Lane Design has on Mobility and Safety

MnPASS lanes

This study, which evaluated the safety and mobility of Minnesota’s MnPASS lanes, found that facilities on I-35W (open access) and I-394 (restricted access) are performing equally well in spite of their different designs. To evaluate the two designs, MTO researchers collected video data and examined lane changes in areas where drivers are allowed to access MnPASS lanes.
