Project Summary

Weigh-in-motion (WIM) systems are expected to run 24 hours a day 365 days a year. When the subgrade and pavement freeze, thaw, and heave the system goes out of calibration. It can take weeks or months before a test truck arrives on-site to recalibrate the system. It is also sometimes necessary to wait until the subgrade has restabilized once the frost has left the ground. In the meantime, the data are of questionable validity. This project will allow for faster notification that a system is out of calibration and faster scheduling of recalibration. In some cases it would also allow researchers to adjust the data between when the system is out of calibration and when it is returned to calibration so the data are valid year around. The goal of this project is to verify the quality of the WIM data at all of the MnDOT WIM sites. Objectives include identifying when the WIM data have problems or when the system is out of calibration; when possible, adjusting the WIM data so they are still usable for analysis; and notification of when the system is in calibration and when it is out of calibration, allowing for adjustments in the data based on the specific traffic patterns seen at the site.
