Monitoring Weaving Sections

We propose to develop a portable unit that will count vehicles and measure their trajectories and velocities in weaving sections. We plan to modify several of our tracking algorithms in order to compute the status of vehicles moving through weaving sections. Commercially available traffic imaging systems do not have the capability to track vehicles as they change lanes. Our approach is to use recursive filtering to extract the traffic objects along with advanced segmentation techniques. Preliminary results with video sequences from Twin Cities weaving sections are very promising.
